In the last 40 years, trapped ions have had consequential contributions to many fields in physics. In particular ion traps are now at the forefront of quantum information technologies. They are a leading candidate for future quantum computing satisfying more DiVincenzo criteria than any other system. This module introduces quadrupole ion traps, derives the ions’ equations of motion and covers the basic requirements for a functional ion trap
