When it came to choosing my university, there were three main reasons that helped to make my decision an easy one. Friendly, approachable lecturers, a shining reputation and excellent facilities. For me, it was clear that Royal Holloway, University of London had them all – and more!
As soon as I stepped into the department on my first visit, I knew that I wanted to be part of this community of students who were passionate about studying physics, and having a good time whilst doing so. Then, when I came back in September, all of the staff and students made me feel so welcome that I fitted in straight away. I soon found out that because of the department's fairly compact size, it's a very close-knit community where everyone is welcomed.
As students, we have a good rapport with the lecturers. We're not just a face among a sea of others – they know us as individuals and by name, rather than as a group. They genuinely care about our progress and well-being and importantly, they teach us to become physicists rather than to just pass exams. There's also a great open-door policy, which means that I can ask my lecturers for help as soon as I have any problems.
Coming to Royal Holloway has helped me to grow as a person, as well as a physicist, and I'd recommend it to anyone considering studying physics at university.
