The SEPnet GCSE Programme

SEPnet GCSE Project

The SEPnet GCSE Programme is a series of free activities designed to support the teaching of physics at GCSE. Through a combination of workshops in schools and activities on university campuses, we provide both students and teachers with the chance to try experiments and explore campuses they wouldn't otherwise have access to. The programme includes:

  • GCSE Taster Session A half day activity on a university campus, designed for students who will soon start, or have just begun, their GCSEs. The session includes a short lecture, an exhibition of hands-on activities and an energy resources quiz.
  • Workshops in school Short (1-2 hour) workshops are available in a range of topics relating to the GCSE syllabus. To sign up, schools need to participate in two workshops a year.
  • A-level Transition Event Aimed at Year 11 students who have chosen or are considering A-level physics, this university campus event introduces some of the new A-level topics, such as particle and nuclear physics, and enhances the skills needed to succeed at A-level.

Why should I take part?

First and foremost, it's free. We can also help with transport costs for events on university campuses, and conveniently deliver workshops in your school. Of course, all sessions are designed to support the GCSE curriculum and can be chosen to fit in with your specification.

Who should attend?

These sessions are intended for A*-C students. At university campus events, each school can bring up to 40 students, whilst workshops can be given to up to two groups of 30. Schools who take part in the programme will receive a Certificate of Participation and be entitled to borrow SEPnet equipment, enabling schools to deliver the workshop to lower sets.

How do I sign up to the programme?

At the GCSE Taster, schools will be invited to sign up to the whole programme, which will involve participating in two workshops a year. Schools can sign up at other times but will be expected to take part the following year and bring students to the next Year 9 GCSE Taster Session. Click here for more details on how to get involved.
