There's simply no better way to gain new skills and unrivalled insight into the industry than with the SEPnet Summer Bursary scheme. With 30 bursaries of £1360 (£170 per week) available, it's an invaluable way for physics undergraduates to gain work experience over the summer holiday period, in either a commercial company or research institution.
A wide range of companies are already involved, waiting to offer placements in a variety of physics disciplines. Last year's students enjoyed placements at partners including QinetiQ, the National Physical Laboratory, Symetrica, the Culham Centre for Fusion Technology and Xyratex.
As well as working in industry, you're able to undertake research work in a SEPnet university (at which you are not a student), and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Then in the winter term, usually mid-November, SEPnet holds a Student Expo at the Royal Society in London. Sharing either a poster or ten minute presentation about your placement, it's a valuable opportunity to hone your presentation and communication skills.
The scheme for summer 2011 is open to physics undergraduates in Year 2 BSc/MSci/MPhys programmes and Year 3 MPhys/MSci programmes at Kent, QMUL, RHUL, Southampton and Sussex. At QMUL, Year 1 students are included with permission from the Head of Department, and at Surrey it's available to Level 1 and 2 students in the BSc/MSc physics programmes.
Placements are available at every SEPnet physics department, as well as regionally at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the National Physical Laboratory, the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, SELEX Galileo, QinetiQ and others (actual placement opportunities vary year-to-year). To receive a full list of projects and contact details, please complete the Student Registration forms.
If you are an eligible student, you will receive an email from your departmental coordinator with details of the available projects, and how to apply. You can also register your interest here. Register your interest.
The individual companies review the applications, and will get in touch if they offer you an interview (unfortunately, we can't cover travel expenses for interviews). All placement opportunities are filled by 14th May 2012.
On our Facebook group page, you'll find handy accommodation hints, as well as other students looking to swap rooms. Simply join the group and join in the discussion!
SEPnet will hold an event at your university in January or February. To give you the best possible chance of securing a placement, the event will include details of the scheme, ideas on what sorts of projects will be offered, and support from your careers service, such as a CV workshop. Plus you can email us at summerplacements@sepnet.ac.uk
